What is self-care?

by Iztel Ballew of Well-Mamas Counseling, LMFT

As human beings we often fall into the role of caring for others, this requires us to be emotionally, physically and mentally available to meet the needs of others. When we are not aware of this exchange, it can leave us feeling depleted, exhausted, stressed or overwhelmed with the demands of daily life. The practice of self-care looks at how we nurture and care for our mind, body and soul. The daily practice of self-care can help us manage stress and enhance overall well-being.

The concept of self-care is fluid, meaning that, because our needs are unique, self-care is not a one-size fits all practice. So the way we care for ourself changes and is different for each person. What works for one person may not work for another.

A compassionate self-care practice begins from a place of intention and mindfulness. Ask yourself, “How am I doing today and what do I need?” This practices requires that you tune in and listen, become aware of your thoughts, feelings and the situations you are experiencing. Taking the time to care for yourself, to nourish your mind, body and soul, is the best thing you can do for you & your family.

What is an act that you engage in that replenishes you?

For some this can begin with the intention of bringing some release or joy such as singing a favorite song, dancing, reading a book, prayer, or exercise.
